Vital / FAQ

Questions, answered straight

Plain answers. No promises we cannot keep.

Getting Vital

Is Vital on Google Play yet?

Not yet. It is in a closed Android beta. Until there is a real Google Play listing, this site shows "Coming soon" and never links to a store. Join the Android beta or leave your email on the home page to hear when that changes.

What about iPhone?

Android comes first. An iPhone version is planned, with no date. Tick "I use an iPhone" on a sign-up form and we will tell you when it is out.

Who can use Vital?

You must be at least 16 to create an account, per the Terms of Service. Vital is for tracking and general information, not for treating a condition.

Why is there a beta, and what do testers do?

Testers use the app on real phones and report what breaks. Google also requires a closed test with at least 12 testers opted in for 14 days in a row before an app from a new personal developer account can be published. The beta page has the details.

Plans and cost

What does it cost?

The core app is free: logging food, barcode scanning, workouts, daily targets, export and account deletion. Premium is an optional plan with extras. Prices are not final, so none are listed here. The app shows them, and what each plan includes, before you pay for anything.

What is the difference between Free and Premium?

Free covers the daily loop: food logging (including barcode scans), workouts, water, weight, targets, the rest timer, badges, your own export and deleting your account. Premium adds depth, such as the full recipe library and meal plans, longer charts, the full weekly recap, the muscle map and calendar, more Home layouts, accent colors and connecting Claude or ChatGPT. This is the plan today and can change before launch.

What happens to my data if I stop paying?

Nothing you logged is deleted. Premium features lock, and new items past a free limit are blocked, but what you already saved stays usable and exportable.

How do I cancel?

Google Play handles billing, so you cancel there: open Google Play, go to Subscriptions, pick Vital and choose Cancel subscription. Deleting your Vital account or the app does not cancel a subscription.

Food and accuracy

How accurate are the food numbers?

They are good estimates, not lab results. Common foods come from the USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy data. Packaged foods come from Open Food Facts, which people fill in themselves. Printed labels are rounded and are allowed some margin too. Vital checks that a product's calories roughly match its protein, fat and carbs and shows a notice when they do not. When a number matters, check the package.

Why can barcode data be wrong?

Barcode lookups use Open Food Facts, a free database that volunteers and food companies add to. Anyone can add or change a product, so an entry can be missing, out of date, for a different size or country, or typed in wrong. You can change any number before you log a product.

How are my daily targets worked out?

From your setup answers: age, sex, height, weight, activity and goal. Vital estimates the calories you burn with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, multiplies by an activity factor between 1.2 and 1.725, then adds or removes calories for your goal and pace. Protein, fat and carbs are split from that total. It is an estimate, so treat it as a starting point and edit any target by hand. Read the full explanation or try the calculator.

Does Vital work offline?

Mostly. Food, weight, workout sets, water and vitamins you log offline are saved on the phone and sent when a connection comes back. The built-in food list searches offline, and so do products you scanned before. Looking up a new barcode, searching packaged foods, signing in and exporting from the server need a connection.

Does Vital connect to Health Connect, Apple Health or a watch?

Not in this version. Vital does not read Health Connect, Apple Health or any watch, so nothing there is imported. Weight, steps and screen time are things you enter or log yourself.

How does Screen Time work?

Vital cannot read your phone's screen time by itself. You type in the daily total from your phone's own Screen Time or Digital Wellbeing page, and the charts, streaks and insights come from those numbers. Focus sessions are different: Vital runs that timer, so those minutes are measured. Every number that came from you is labelled as entered by you.

AI and connections

Does Vital have a built-in AI?

No, not in the first release. The coach gives rule-based quick answers. If you want an AI, you can add your own key (free), or connect Claude or ChatGPT to your log (a Premium feature). Both are optional and off until you set them up.

What does the coach send if I add my own AI key?

Only what you switch on in AI Coach settings: daily targets, today's totals, recent food, weight trend and workouts, each on its own switch, plus your question and the recent messages in the chat. It goes straight from your phone to the AI service you picked, and Vital's servers never see your key or your chats. The AI service handles what it receives under its own terms, and those differ: some free tiers let the provider use what you send.

What can Claude or ChatGPT see if I connect them?

You create an access token in the app. With it, an AI assistant can read your summaries, targets, weight and workouts. A read and write token can also log a food or a weight. It cannot export everything, change settings, delete your account or make more tokens. What it reads goes to that AI company, so connect only one you trust. You can revoke a token any time. Setup steps are on the connect page.

Is Vital made or endorsed by Anthropic or OpenAI?

No. Vital works with their apps through open standards and is not made, endorsed or sponsored by either company.

Privacy and your data

Is my data sold, or used for ads?

No. Vital has no ads, does not sell your personal data and does not use your health data for advertising. The Privacy Policy lists the services involved: the servers that host Vital, the store that handles payment, Open Food Facts when you scan or search, and the AI service you choose if you turn on the coach.

Does this website track me?

No. It sets no cookies and runs no analytics or advertising scripts, so there is no cookie banner. The calculators run in your browser and send nothing. The only thing the site ever sends is the email you choose to submit on a sign-up form.

How do I export or delete my data?

In the app, Settings has Export all my data and Delete account. If you cannot open the app, the delete-account page explains how to ask by email. Deleting is permanent, and it does not cancel a subscription.

Is this medical advice?

No. Vital is a tracking tool. Its targets come from a standard equation and your answers, not from a clinician. Talk to a doctor or dietitian before big changes to how you eat or train, especially with a medical condition, a history of disordered eating, or if you are pregnant.
